Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: People who would need to use caffeine but chose not to because of fear of addiction, health reasons, or do not like the taste.

What: This differs immensely because people do not want to drink the natural alternative to caffeine or coffee because they do not want to put their health at risk.

Why: The need is different from the insiders due to no need to have to be awoken to focus throughout the day because they have a natural response to wake up on time and get their work done.

Interview 1: The first interview was conducted with a teacher who wakes up early to work with elementary school students yet does not drink any caffeinated beverages despite her early hours. This individual contests that due to a heart issue she is not allowed to drink caffeine as it could endanger her health and could not drink any substitute that could elevate her blood pressure above a normal level. She enjoyed hearing about this opportunity and realizes that there is a need for a substitute since many people drink caffeinated beverages and should have an alternative.  Despite this there was interest in the product, not for personal use, but to recommend to people she works with that drink energy drinks to try my opportunity as an alternative.

Interview 2: The second interview was with someone who is about to finish up high school without drinking any caffeinated drinks throughout their career, and do not see the need for an alternative. This individual stressed that coffee and energy drinks have caused many of their friends to be groggy after the caffeine high wears off. In addition, they do not even want an alternative explanation because do not recognize a need for themselves to have an alternative to caffeine. They offered an alternative to my opportunity by suggesting a herbal tea, but I will stick with my current opportunity instead of changing it in an even more competitive market.

Interview 3: The third interview consisted of someone that works in the Gainesville area as a volunteer at a hospital who has early morning shifts. This person highlighted that the reason they do not drink caffeine is because of the side effects that can be attributed to caffeine. Also, there existed a drive to drink water, juices, and teas to keep himself awake instead of caffeine pills or drinks. The interviewee stated that this has related in a healthier lifestyle and helps with his focus volunteering and in class. He would be open to trying the beverage that I proposed and would be open to using it since it is organic and holistic.

Interview 4: The fourth interview was with a graduate student at the University of Florida who has long hours at the library and works as a TA. The only caffeinated beverage that this individual drink is sodas which have limited caffeine quantity Also, they do not drink teas or any herbal drinks as they do not see the need too, which led to the individual seeing no need for my beverage that my opportunity offers because they do not prefer to drink organic beverages due to taste. This person recognizes that my drink would be appealing to some people but reminded me that most people would not drink it since many people like coffee, soda, or have other supplements to keep them attentive throughout the day. This individual would tell people about my opportunity to see if his colleagues would be interested in my opportunity.

Interview 5: The final interview was involved with a security guard at a local community here in Gainesville. Like most security guards their shifts start at night here in Gainesville community at gate houses. This individual prefers phone games and soda to keep themselves awake rather than caffeine. Even though as security guards need to be awake and attentive to who is coming through the gate or is in the community, this individual does not drink coffee because they do not like the taste and the effect it has on their body (jitteriness). Furthermore, this person’s body is used to the late nights and does not need to be influenced by caffeine. This person enjoys the idea the I brought forward but would not be interested in using my product.

Inside  the Boundary                                                   Outside the Boundary
Who is in: those that drink caffeinated beverages for long days
Who is not: those that do not drink high caffeine drinks and work long days
The need is: a replacement for high caffeine drinks and supplements
Need is not: because they have health complications, do not like the taste, or fear of being addicted to caffeine
Why: caffeine addiction, jitteriness, and health implications
Alternative explanations: use to waking up early and body can keep itself awake and focused without caffeine

  1. Hey Austin,
I liked how you found people that were so diverse and different from one another in the things that they do in their everyday lives for your post. You summarized your interviews well; they were concise but detailed. Lastly, the chart explains the different aspects of what is in the boundary and what is outside the boundary well. Overall, great job!
    All the best,
    Luis
